Researchers in Germany and England have found the first direct evidence of the genetic function leading to lupus.. an enzyme that cleans up Dnase1 (waste produced by cells when they die). Dnase1 just might hold the key to unlocking a treatment for system lupus erythematosus, commonly referred to as Lupus or SLE, according to research published in the most recent issue of Nature Genetics.

"The correlation between lack of Dnase1 as (a) clearance protein and SLE ... has perhaps helped to better establish the view that removal of cell debris is crucial for an organisms to prevent autoimmune disease, in particular SLE," said Dr. Tarik Möröy of the Institute for Cell Biology in Germany. He performed the research with Dr. Hans-Georg Mannhers of the Institute for Anatomy and Embryology.

Whatever treatment comes out of Dnase1 research, more work remains. To read the full story, check out Wired News.

British scientists are closer than ever to developing drugs based on cannabis that will take away pain -- but also take away the "high.'' Researchers from Imperial College in London have separated cannabinoids, the active components of the drug, and shown that they act on both the brain and spinal cord.

The findings will allow scientists to develop cannabinoid-based drugs designed to target the spinal cord to relieve pain, but bypass the brain to prevent the often euphoric high associated with using cannabis. In their research, scientists used receptors for cannabinoids on the spinal cord, particularly the areas concerned with pain processing. By delivering drugs directly to the spinal cord to relieve pain they bypass the brain so there are no psychoactive effects.

New drugs based on cannabis are still years away but the findings, published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience, are an important first step.

 GROUP NEWS

CPSG Spring Vacation!  Q
Over the Memorial Day weekend CPSG had a get together at Pipe Stem State Park , WV. It was attended by: RaggedyAnne, Rich39, MaryLReed, Ooops, BellePots, Uni, Dragonrider, SunE1, their families, and friends (a total of 30).

Some of us camped and some stayed in nearby hotels. The first day we mostly gathered at the camp ground where SunE prepared dinner in her motorhome with help from Ooops and Raggedy. Even though it rained, no one wanted to leave. We had so much fun and just couldn't get enough real hugs. Even spouses were hugged and received kisses on both cheeks (KOBC). All our husbands and wives had a great time and felt so welcomed into this surrogate family. Throughout the weekend there were card games going on, fun time in the pool & jacuzzi. and lots of chatting.

The highlight of the weekend was our Saturday night banquet. The evening started off with the members telling about themselves, how they found CPSG, and what it means to them.

RaggedyAnne had arranged for a friend to sing "Love Can Build a Bridge." The words were so moving, members spontaneously clasped hands. Eventually the whole room was joined together as our friends and family reached out their hands to be joined in this chain of caring love. Several spouses said later that now they really understand the love and support within CPSG.

At the conclusion of the banquet, candles were lit in memory of members who had passed on. Annie, SunE, Rich, Ooops & Belle each held a candle as they talked about a member who'd passed away. When all candles were lit, they were placed in the center of the table and the lights were turned out for a moment of silence. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.

The last day RaggedyAnne hosted a BBQ at her home. Everyone had a great time playing spades, talking and eating great food. Steve, RaggedyAnne's husband, did a wonderful job standing over the BBQ all day. THANKS STEVE!

To see photographs of the get together visit CPSG's Picture Gallery, hosted by PictureTrail.com. Our 'Gallery' has 5 photo albums; the CPSG Spring Vacation, pictures of our family/friends, pictures of our pets, and SunE1's album of photos taken while traveling around the US and Canada.

& Special thanks to Rich39 and RaggedyAnne for working so hard on this event. It took a long time and lots of coordination ... we all thank you for your hard work!! This was our first get together.. but based on its success... it won't be the last. Rich and Annie...Want to do it again for next year? =)
